My father owned a '99 with the 4.7L. Put 200k miles on it with minimal maintenance (a starter, radiator, and some brakes) and trailer towing every weekend. That Jeep with good tires was unstoppable in the snow. The 4.7L HO V8 has 265hp while the non-HO 4.7L has 235hp. The 4.7L HO sure makes those WJ's fun to drive.
4.7 using oil. Until a short time ago i never had to add oil in between the oil service intervals. But just before my last oil change i saw the level below the normal band. Now almost 4000 Km further the level was below the normal band again and i had to add a bid more then one liter. No external leaks observed.
Came out about an hour later and started it up, no tick at all. Idling about 5 minutes it started to come back. Pulled the valve covers, found the ******bag PO apparently didnt know you needed to change the oil. There was literally a half inch of sludge on the cam journals and heads. Pulled the cams out (This was okay as I needed to install my
2000 WJ 4.7 130k. Ok, so I was sure that my head gasket had gone but I'm questioning it now. I have oil in the coolant, and it looks like the #8 plug has had some coolant getting at it. All of the other plugs and the oil look clean. I just did a compression test, all cylinders were between 105 and 135 PSI.
the Oil Pressure Gauge on 04 is a Dummy Gauge. But the sensors do go bad. The 04 WJ gauges are not instant read gauges they just Is it there or is it not. I think 4.7 MIN oil pressure is 7 or 8 PSI. I run 10w40 in my 99 4.7 with 225k. my Oil pressure Hot idle 14psi

The chain could have skipped teeth, or a sticking valve and it can have a bend valve stem now. But indeed you should have a check engine light with a P030- code (- = cylinder number) or P0300 for multiple cylinder misfire.

Any 'sludge' that shows on the oil filler is just some foaming that happens there, and was actually 'solved' by changing the design of the oil filler neck on later WJs. Although I haven't torn into it to check for sludge, I have 165k on my 4.7, and there's no indication that sludge is a factor. It still gets Mobil 1 every 5-7k.
